Being constantly surrounded by ghosts who are so delighted that he can see and hear them that they can’t leave him alone is exhausting, and he’s tired of not fitting in or being able to have anything approaching a normal life. He’s never alone, and it can be really difficult for him to distinguish between the living and the dead – as ghosts look like regular people to him – and many’s the job or roommate or boyfriend he’s lost because he (as they thought) started talking to thin air, or because the sudden appearance of a ghost has made him jump for no reason… and learning to drive is a big no-no he could end up with a car full of ghostly distractions or ghosts jumping out into the road in front of him as a joke and… just no. Josh’s lifelong ability to see and hear ghosts has seriously screwed up his life in a number of ways. It’s a fun, light-hearted read with a spooky vibe and a fun cast of characters, and I enjoyed the author’s lively, easy-to-read style – although if you’re looking for a story that’s going to scare the pants off you and make you want to hide behind the sofa, this isn’t it. Named a Most Anticipated Book of 2022 by Buzzfeed It's clear that Johnnie is more excited about the outing than Roy the morning of the outing, Roy considers staying in the city, but Johnnie hopes he joins them, knowing that if Roy stays in the city, he'll be forced to stay as well. They decide (without a consensus, as Roy thinks it looks "cheap") on buying her a gold-plated brooch in the shape of a butterfly and plan to present it to her during the outing. Roy, Johnnie, and Johnnie's friend David pool their money to buy Sylvia, a girl who is a member of their congregation, a birthday present. The outing is open to all people: the "saved" members of their congregation, the unbaptized, the sinners, Greeks, Jews, and gentiles alike. Usually they take everyone to a park, but this year, they opt for a more extravagant option and charter a large boat to sail up the Hudson and deposit them for the day in Bear Mountain. The outing is a yearly event put on by the church as a way for congregants to enjoy nature together and praise God in a wide-open space. In this story, too, the title also refers to the setting of the narrative, here an outing organized by the congregation for which their father, Gabriel, is a deacon. "The Outing" continues in the same world and with the same cast of characters as the first story, "The Rockpile," but in this story the brothers Roy and Johnnie are teenagers. Neither naïve nor a fool, his main weakness is lack of experience. Five years of hard labor in the mines haven’t quelled Nic’s will to survive. In vivid first-person narrative, Nielsen (the Ascendance Trilogy) sketches a slave’s-eye view of the Roman Empire. If things are not going well, try responding in a positive way like showing kindness, concern and/or love toward the other person. If you remember that positive actions can result in reciprocated positive action, you can change the way the conversation is going. This concept is useful in thinking about communication because it gives you insights about how to change the course of a conversation. Usually they are trying to create a positive context so that you will respond favorably. That is why so many people who are trying to sell stuff to you will offer you kindness, incentives and compliments. In communication, reciprocity means that in response to friendly actions, people are frequently nicer and more cooperative conversely, in response to hostile actions, people will usually respond similarly. Reciprocity is the idea that one action will usually match another action (think of the word reciprocal). This put me off at first but I quickly became accustomed to it and now I really enjoy the format. This means that you must get accustomed to 2 voices for each character. Michael will handle the chapters where the main character is male and he will do the female voices. If the main character is female then Kate will read the entire chapter including the male voices. Each chapter will be read by one or the other depending on the chapter's main character. 3) The narration is done by 2 excellent narrators: Michael Kramer and Kate Reading. 2) Robert Jordan can tend to be wordy at times and some of the books along the way feel a little bloated, but each one does advance the story. Brandon Sanderson is an awesome Fantasy writer so the conclusion of the series is in good hands. Some things you should know before you start: 1) Robert Jordan did not live long enough to finish the story, but he did pass along his vision for the conclusion to Brandon Sanderson who is writing the final books. This is a long series (13+ books) and each book so far is between 23-41 hours of listening in unabridged format. This first book is excellent and will likely have you listening to the next book in the journey before you know it. The Eye of the World kicks off Robert Jordan's epic fantasy series and it is a step that should not be taken lightly. Your first step down a very long and winding road. |
